TIM, Vodafone, Wind or H3G: who’s offering the best 3G internet access?

Posted by: Francesco In: Internet & Web 2.0|Science & Technology

I just received from PromoDigital a bunch of USB modems from the four Italian mobile network operators. Now I have the state of the art USB modems from TIM, Vodafone, Wind and H3G and in the next weeks I’m going to try them all to see who performs best!

I never had USB modems, as since now I used Vodafone’s HSDPA/HSUPA PCI Express card produced by Option that I successfully used with my MacBook Pro.

After a quick glimpse at the new toys I’ve found out the different manufacturers of the modems:

  • TIM had its dongle produced by Onda Communication, an Italian manufacturer
  • Vodafone had its Internet Key produced by Huawei
  • Wind and H3G share the same hardware made by Huawei (but a different model from the Vodafone one)

After a first look I have to say I like very much TIM‘s USB modem look and feel, while I really appreciate the idea of a retractable USB connector in Vodafone‘s one.

All the four have also a microSD slot, which is great as they can also be used as external memories as well as readers for your camera’s memory cards.

In the coming weeks you’ll read updates about me using these modems, especially on Twitter! Tune in and share this experience with me, if you have questions or specific tasks you want me to do with the modems please ask!

Thanks for the information. I will be spending one month in southern Italy from Canada and going to my small town where I was born next month. As you suggest, and as a Mac user, I will probably go for the Vodaphone fastest modem. Do they allow pay as you go service and how much will it cost me?

I also use the Vodafone E172
series. During the 6 months I used it and no problems at all. All connections smooth and stable speed. I really liked this one.

I USE THE VODAFONE USB CONNECT IN VENICE, ITALY

IN THE APARTMENT WHERE I AM IT CONSTANTLY LOSES SIGNAL AND EACH TIME YOU RECONNECT ITS A 15 MINUTE CHARGE SO THAT RATHER SUCKS- YOU CAN EASILY PAY FOR 2OR 3 HOURS OR MORE IN LESS THAN AN HOUR IF YOU CONTINUALLY RECONNECT SINCE EACH RECONNECT IS AUTOMATICALLY ANOTHER 15 MIN WHICH SINCE THE BAD CONNNECTION IS THERE SIGNAL- IT IS SIMPLY A RIP OFF. ON THE OTHER HAND OUTSIDE WHEN THE WEATHER IS FAIR IT IS EXTREMELY CONVENIENT WAY TO CONNECT AND WORKS WELL
