USB Modems test: WRAPPING UP

Posted by: Francesco In: Internet & Web 2.0

It has been great to have the opportunity to try all these modems, and for this I thank PromoDigital.

If you need a quality and consistent mobile internet experience on the Mac, you want to go for Vodafone’s modem. They have great network coverage and their software works. Shame on TIM for wasting such great network service, with awful software. You may consider them only if you’re on a PC.

If you’re just looking for mobile internet to use once in a while and don’t need blazing fast speeds, Wind is indeed the choice for you.

I’d not reccomend H3G to anyone actually. It doesn’t work where they don’t have coverage (still lots of spots outside largely populated areas), but they’re still more expensive than Wind. It’s definitely not worth it!

My personal podium is:

  1. Vodafone
  2. TIM
  3. Wind
  4. H3G

how was the data coverage on vodafone? I’m going to be working in italy for 2 weeks this summer and I’m contemplating shelling out the money for a vodafone USD modem but I’m somewhat concerned that the location I’ll be in will have weak coverage.

I also didn’t see any options on vodafone’s website for renting the USB modem (as I’ll only need it for a limited time).

Were you able to get the TIM USB modem working on a Mac?

@tyler Your best option would be to come to Italy with a USB modem you can use with any SIM, and just buy a pay as you go card.

If you’re planning to visit southern Italy as well, TIM may be your best option as it has consistent coverage throughout Italy.

I didn’t manage to get my Onda datacard working on my Mac.

i bought the vodafone USB modem today in rome after doing some research and reading your reviews. i’m running os 10.4 on an mbp. works great, faster than i expected too.

per speakeasy’s speed test, i’m ranging between 700kbps – 2800kbps. not too bad.
